INSPIRATION INTO FASHION

Video: Youtube
If traditional African textiles and Hip- Hop street fashion were to have a baby, this collection would be it. Emmanuelle Jones and Ghazaleh Khalifeh let their inspiration lead the way in the creation of their collection. They collaborated to present at flagship Academy of Art University collection show during the
Mercedes - Benz Fashion Week New York Fall / Winter 2015 season.

“Remain true to your artistic vision and quirkiness”, said Jones. Who knew this advice would take her as far as the New York Fashion Week runway? Both students are currently obtaining their Master's of Fine Arts in Fashion Design.

“I want it in my closet like now! Their collection was clothing I could see myself wearing”, said Lee Liang, AAU Graduate Acting student.
“The collection has so much movement in the clothing. I love the long drape lines”, said Keri Yourick, AAU Graduate Fashion Design student.
Hip- Hop culture, fashion, and art influenced Jones’ designs. Layers dominated  the silhouettes. Long sleeve coats, and oversized silhouettes showcase the Hip Hop element. Designers are trying to redefine a new look, that brings forward the sexual element of the Hip Hop culture.

Khalifeh fed off Jones’ inspiration and complemented the silhouettes with memorable textiles. “I liked that the collection consisted of complementary colors and use of different textiles”, said Amy Tran, AAU Graduate Fashion Merchandising student.

Khalifeh’s inspiration of African textiles and brush stroke prints came from the late painter,
Jean- Michel Basquiat.

Painting by Jean- Michel Basquiat.
Inspiration from Basquiat read primarily in the color palette. Neutrals, deep reds and autumn orange are used across the printed textiles by Khalifeh. All fabrics are 100% natural cotton, which would add an additional layer of quality to the garments.
The use of draping in the coats added movement to elongate the look. The sleek silhouettes essentiate the elements of graffiti in the fabric. Baggy and oversized garments are common trends in Hip- Hop culture. The use of platform tennis shoes gave emphasis to the urbanity.
It is exciting to see street artists like Basquiat still influencing fashion today. Street born music like Hip Hop to also enter into the fashion foray. Street rules the closet, once again.
